Dancing Damsels

Well… It’s time again for penning down something… It wasn’t like; there was nothing to write about last week… rather there were too many things to write about… My haircut that went haywire… My calls that finally got converted… My purse that was happily stolen… My sleeping hours that were drastically cut short… My meal that was finally returning to normal! Lolz… However, barring the ‘my’ life happenings, one substantial thing that happened which had large stakeholders was… the re-opening of all dance bars!! The adjoining caricature is drawn by one of my good friends and was published in Loksatta last week… It is significant not just because it is done by one of my buddies… It is so because; I’m always awed by the fact that, how a tint of humour in social satire can be the most visible and widely disseminative form of general awareness.

Last Sunday I was watching The Big fight on NDTV, wherein prominent personalities were debating on the pros and cons of this decision about unbolting the doors of the dance bars here. What caught my attention was how easily people get away with lame reasons… One of the gentle men out there even went up to suggesting that, men go to these dance bars, because their wives can’t entertain them… So, it is indeed the onus upon the ladies at home, to don garish ghagras, put up gaudy make-up and entertain their Gods! It couldn’t get more ridiculous than this!! (I could barely imagine myself doing that!! Holy crap!)

First of all, I don’t understand why in the first place is there such a hue and cry over this issue? In a country like ours, we’ve got many problems to take care of… The amount of money spent on such endless debates could be better utilized for other purposes. Dance bars are no new things… Our rich culture exhibits the existence of mujra-mahals and rangashaalas since time immemorial. So, all of a sudden pointing fingers at people doesn’t make sense. Just as you see in the cartoon, alcohol has become the man’s lame-stick… he’s not even bothered about his growing handicap… All he can see is the entry to Heaven’s door viz, the Dance Bar! Men, who though aren’t physically blind, but have mental blocks, would get drawn to such falsity. So, it’s basically all up to the person to realize what is good or bad for him. Let him decide for himself. Let’s not play agony uncles and aunts. After all, we have much better things to do!!

  • Hehe, nice to see you back to male bashing again! What happened to the rich guy's 5 star cabarets? And don't tell me women don't drink and have girl's nights out with male strippers? Many of these women are the high class married-to-a-millionaire variety.

  • Cudnt agree more...

This issue has been blown out of proportion... Even if people want to address this issue closing down dance bars is not the remedy as these women would not have anything to fall back on for a living and wud further worsen the situation... I remember a couple of years ago strict regulations against prostitution were imposed resulting in women selling their bodies for as low as 20-25 rupees...

Dance bars.. prostitutes... have all been part of the social system for as long as time... Only difference is that then they used to be protected by the kings...

There are many other things that need immediate attention like children who are trapped in this horrific institution, women being kidnapped or blackmailed into this profession, the horrible conditions in which these women exist, AIDS, etc.

a lot of efforts are already on in these areas... May not be able to eradicate them completely... but betterment of the life of even one soul is worth the effort...

  • Shipra,

I admire that you even care to observe and put your thoughts on these in writing !...but I have to put I burst into a chucke when you compared dance-bars with Rangashaalas!! Rangashalaas are very ancient; where art forms were exhibited as myriad manifestations of the spirit ! and Rangabhoomis are where they were performed with honor and sacredness :) so comparing the dance-bars where individuals go to satisfy their carnal instincts are, you know not quiet Rangashaalas :))...Just wanted to point out a very cursory, though possibly revealing and profound explanation of the origin of Rangashaalas.

Anyways... I guess you meant royal harems and that sort where concubines used to "perform" for regal pleasure. And yes as someone pointed out these have been happening since centuries; in a liitle glorified fashion in royal environs and in select places among common people. In either case it was never considered as an act that was pure or one that exhibited the best of human values :)

That brings me to your point about let people do what they want as it is upto them. Greater the sense of belongingness higher is the sense of responsibility...one can either say let them do what they want or through a sense of caring one can do something about it. Closing dance-bars is just a superficial ad-hoc solution but transforming the individual is lke nipping it in the bud. That transformation happens when one experiences one's Self. I have myself heard and seen treacherous criminals completely transform through Yoga, breathing exercises leading them into deep meditation...that deep state of the consciousness where the latent conditioning of the mind is ironed out, that deep rest, deeper than sleep, which an average individual never experiences ! (who is in either a sleeping, dreaming or wakeful state). I know villages which have completely eradicated alcoholism by this transformation. I myself have experienced the benefits and the concomitant clarity in my observation, expression and perception of every aspect of this beautiful life thro' that deep rest. My gosh...I can't even believe I would have expressed myself like this before !

So with effortless conviction I can say this transformation is possible and am participating in it and witnessing it happen in many parts of the world from Mongolia to South Africa and Haiti to Australia (yes no kidding ...real places didn't pick these place randomly ..!!) Either take responsibility without burden like a mother does to its dear one or be an observer.

So the choice is ours, whether we live our life like a tourist or like a pilgrim: one who takes every breath and lives every moment with honor and respects oneself totally...whose consequently has no choice but to have a feeling of
belongingness to the whole world and taking responsibility, for that alone brings in him/her the power to change.

Oh...never realized it would be that long...you may take it as rambling but hmmm... I guess there is something more that it, isnt'it !! Just thought of writing as I can see that it would stimulate your sharp intelligence, openess and creativity. Wonder how I chanced upon your blog...

btw I am not any social worker ...an engineer just like you with a very loving family just like you...formerly from Mumbai now in Boston.. but with that precious seed sowed in me in a question form ...of what exaclty life is, who am I !

  • Anonymous: Firstly, my bad with the Rangashaala part! I agree completely with you when you say 'Greater the sense of belongingness higher is the sense of responsibility'; and thoroughly acquiesce with you about the immense benefits of Yoga. It wasnt rambling at all... rather it was very informative. Thanks for dropping by!
